Fred Theatre is committed to supporting schools in as many ways as possible.
At least half of Fred Theatre’s productions each year are suitable for audiences of all ages. We also produce shows that are developed specifically with schools in mind.
For schools Fred offers special discounts to groups wanting to attend public performances, including free tickets for teachers. We also make sure there are plenty of conveniently timed matinees. Members of the cast and crew are usually available, with advance notice, to meet and talk to school parties after public performances.
We now also offer schools the opportunity to book a visiting performance. Typically these are 90 minute shows, featuring a cast of six professional actors. Less technical than public performances, we concentrate on the text and producing a faithful representation of the original—just a little shorter! We can also offer an additional workshop for students, after the performance, which examines themes in the play and our production. An excellent introduction to the text in hand or a timely revision tool, often more convenient and nearly always more cost-effective than a trip out to a theatre.
Our schools’ productions take care not to preach any particular philosophy, but they do contain a lot of material that will stimulate debate and encourage younger minds to question.
IN-SCHOOLS PRODUCTIONS FOR 2018-19
A CHRISTMAS CAROL
Feedback from this year’s autumn tour included many great comments from students and staff, such as the following:
“The performance was phenomenal! All of the pupils were extremely complimentary and positive about the performance. The actors were truly brilliant. The ‘faithfulness’ to the text has left the pupils engaged and ready for their English Literature studies.”
A Christmas Carol is available for in-school performances from 8 October to 14 December 2018.
Our highly popular production of Shakespeare’s classic tale of ambition will be touring for the third time next year. Here’s feedback from one school:
“It was fantastic! So professional and carefully engineered to give the students what they need. The actors were really impressive—they held the audience for the entire performance; no mean feat when dealing with 210+ sleepy teenagers!”
Macbeth is available for in-school performances from 21 January to 15 March 2019.
ROMEO AND JULIET
We’re always happy to hear from teachers who have suggestions for other shows we might tour with. Just recently we’ve had several requests for Romeo and Juliet. Therefore I’m delighted to announce that we’re adding this Shakespeare classic to the menu for 2018-19.
Romeo and Juliet is available for in-school performances from 18 February through to Easter.
JEKYLL AND HYDE
Finally, I’m pleased to report that great progress is being made on our new adaptation of Jekyll and Hyde. This is being written for us by Jonathan Lloyd and Abigail Walton, the team who also adapted A Christmas Carol.
Jekyll and Hyde is available for in-school performances from 22 October 2018 to 15 March 2019.
All we need to perform at your school is a space approximately 5m x 5m with room (of course) for the audience.
So, why not give your students the advantage of a live performance and book with Fred Theatre today?
